So Christmas in 1981, I had just turned 14 and Santa had just given me as I recall a Gene Vincent Compilation LP, The Polecats Are Go LP, probably a Pen set, various Marvel comics , you know the normal stuff oh and of course socks and pants .......but no Meteors records as I had not even discovered them yet .......I was a late starter for sure !
So for The Meteors the express train rolled on and on but without original drummer Mark Robertson who had quit after the Dec 1981 gig in Paris. Undeterred Paul and Nigel took on Woodie Taylor on Drums, Woodie had been a constant regular at Meteor gigs through 81 and was also playing in his own band 'Fear' . But when the chance came to join his favourite band he couldn't let the opportunity slip away.
So into the start of 1982 the line up is :
Fenech - Guitar/Voacls
Nigel Lewis - Bass/ Vocals
Woodie Taylor - Drums.
Paul Fenech - Guitar/Vocals
Releases for 1982 were :
Mutant Rock / Hills Have Eyes - 45 rpm.
Woodie, Nigel & Paul . |

For one gig (around the time between Nigel leaving and Mick White joining) a bass guitar player called 'Spud' from Punk New Wave band 'Martian Dance' was used at the Swindon show (shown below). This was also the first of just 17 gigs in the band for 'RJ Pathetic' (Russell Jones)

Somewhere around this time Nigel Lewis quit the band along with manager Nick Garrard, both never to return. Nigel would go on to form firstly The Escalators and then the Tall Boys, Woodie stayed on with the band but would also be gone within a few shows and departed after the Klub Foot show on the 25th July.
And it was around this point that I found the band and finally caught up and bought the EP , the Graveyard Stomp 45 and the new single 'Mutant Rock' .......better late than never I suppose !!!!!!

ReplyDeleteIt's good someone is keeping their history alive
ReplyDeleteAgree with the above. Great to keep the Meteors alive. Great times these were.
ReplyDeleteHello Mick.Recently relocated my old stash of bootleg cassettes and am attempting to digitize them.Just done one which is labelled 'Glasgow Night Moves March 1982',no specific date.At one point PPF mentions they're playing Edinburgh the following night. It's Nigel on bass and I think Woody playing drums. They're introduced as the first band on stage and there's no encore.'Rockabilly psychosis' is dedicated to Theatre of hate so my guess is the gig is a support slot.I have a much better recording of the 21.3.82 Reading Top Rank gig which is definitely supporting TOH,the set lists are similar.Glasgow has 19 songs,Reading has 18. Glasgow features 'Rockabilly Psychosis','Insight' and 'Blue Sunshine' which Reading doesn't. Reading includes 'Mutant Rock' (with extra verse not on the single version),'Rattle Snakin' Daddy' and 'Let it Slide' which aren't in the Glasgow set.
ReplyDeleteCheers for the info, if you have those dates for the Glasgow show that would be great.
DeleteSome great info and pics on here didn't get into em til 86 so missed the nigel era keep it up mate love all incarnations of the band!!!
